Imagine a scene from a Bollywood movie smack in the middle of downtown San Jose; the color of swirling saris, the rhythm of pounding feet, and the relentless energy of brilliant beats—that’s Non Stop Bhangra.
Non Stop Bhangra started as a club night in 2004. Its organizers began with the goal of bringing Bhangra, a traditional Punjabi folk music and dance to a wider audience. The monthly event has since become a fixture in the San Francisco nightlife scene, drawing hundreds of fans to join in the frenzy. Meanwhile, the group has built a loyal following with a genre-busting elixir of North Indian Bhangra music and dance, shaken with hip hop, reggae, and electronica. The night is all-encompassing and features a dance lesson, dance performances, and DJs.
The dance company, Dholrythms, highlights the ancestral and ethnic roots of the Punjabi dance form while pushing boundaries with contemporary influences. The result is a fresh and exciting dance full of joy, energy, and passion.
