If you don’t think it swings if it’s only got those strings…think again. Dedicated to the continued appreciation of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Hot Club de France, Le Jazz Hot performs as a string quartet, utilizing violin, bass and guitar…and no brass. Their unique sensibility recalls 1930’s Paris, and with their gypsy swing transport the listener back to the crowded halls Reinhardt must have played at his peak.
Le Jazz Hot’s unique sound incorporates a myriad of Jazz Age influences including the work of Claude Debussy and Jelly Roll Morton, breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. The ensemble also features two-time Grammy® Award winning violinist Evan Price, French guitarist Isabelle Fontaine, SF guitarist Jeff Magidson, bassist Sam Rocha and a swinging , one-man rhythm section, Clint Baker.
With their sister group, Hot Club of San Francisco, Le Jazz Hot was the first American band invited to play the Festival de Jazz Django Reinhardt in Samois-Sur-Seine, “ground zero” for the current Django revival. The group has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Maria Muldaur, Dan Hicks (of “Hot Licks” fame) and Barbara Dane, and has recorded albums including 2012’s Live at Yoshi’s.
