What’s in a name? Drei im roten Kreis (Three in the Red Circle), loosely named after the film Le Cercle Rouge by Jean-Pierre Melville, is a conspiratorial community. The trio has created jazz with strong American roots, but with their own, powerful additions. The film that inspired the group's moniker represents a synthesis of French new-wave cinema and the American gangster film. This "new wave" in film (Nouvelle Vague) originated in at the end of the fifties and, for the most part, was created without artificial light and used hand-held cameras to create a realistic style. Exactly this pure narrative style, full of turns and surprises, is what Drei im roten Kreis cultivates. Once the trio has gathered momentum, up-tempo Swing, Latin, Blues and Afro-grooves weave between standards and the group’s own compositions; risk-taking and styled after film soundtracks.
The band’s leader, Reiner Witzel, studied in New York and Cologne, has recorded with David Sanborn among others, and teaches at Frankfurt University. Christian Scheuber studied in New York and Bern, and recorded with the likes of Benny Golson and Herb Geller. In 1999 he won the Jazz Ear Award for his work on the CD Live in Norway with Regina Litvinova. Contrabassist, composer, producer and educator, Joscha Oetz works in Jazz,Classical and Contemporary Classical contexts, as well as Hip Hop, Latin Music and beyond.
The trio regularly plays throughout Europe and around the world. Their most recent release is 16mm, out on Jazz Sick Records in 2010.
