Ray is an American smooth jazz guitarist. He grew up in Richmond, California, and began playing guitar at age 17.

The Ray Obiedo & Mambo Caribe, formed in 1978, is made up of some of the finest Jazz musicians the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. With its heavy influence of African grooves, Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms and a hybrid of pop & soul, a traditional Latin Jazz sound is always at the core of the ensemble. A unique aspect of the group is its ability to always incorporate a variety of Funk and R & B groove elements into its various arrangements.

In 1989 he signed with Windham Hill, with whom he would release five albums in eight years At the outset of his career, Ray regularly shifted between jazz and R&B, working with a variety of artists including Herbie Hancock, Julian Priester and Sheila E.; he also led the fusion unit Kick as well as the rock outfit Rhythmus 21. After signing to Windham Hill, Ray made his solo debut with 1989's Perfect Crime, followed two years later by Iguana; with 1993's Sticks and Stones. He reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts.

The band works with a wonderfully rich array of textures and colors, melding together all of its musical elements for a uniquely distinct Bay Area flavor.
